The Investigative Reporters and Editors: The foremost organization active in broadening the frontiers of investigative journalism and defending freedom of information access.

 

The National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting: If raw data enters into your story plans, the NICAR gurus will help you obtain, crunch and make sense of the numbers.

 

The Poynter Institute: A think tank on journalism and quality writing as it pertains to media. Each year they join with local newspapers to sponsor the popular "Writer's Workshop" series of seminars -- every writer should attend a nearby session!

 

The Pew Center for Civic Journalism: A charitable trust dedicated to the study and propagation of journalism through research and educational grants. They are especially fond of the "Community Journalism" model.
