CENSUS 2000:

Solano languages -- One of the exciting aspects of covering "Census 2000" was the opportunity to put rows of raw, impersonal numbers into a humanistic perspective. After attending multiple seminars to learn how to employ Computer Assisted Reporting to tame the reams of data pouring from the Census Bureau, I became the lead writer on the project.

This story illustrates the many new languages being spoken in our area through the plight of a local teenager.

Local gay households -- For the first time, Census 2000 offered a glimpse into gay households. No, the Feds did not inquire directly about sexual orientation in the national counting. But several key pieces of data, when massaged through Excel and Access, DID provide a fair approximation of same sex unions.
