SCIENCE/MEDICAL NEWS:

The face of stem cell research -- It was late August 2001. Controversy over President George W. Bush's decision to ban the harvesting of fetal stem cells occluded all other issues offered by the young administration.

A contact informed me of breakthrough stem cell research underway in Solano County -- within the reading area of ANG's Vallejo publication. The work promised an alternative to fetal cells -- if successful, effectively silencing the debate.

The story ran on Sept. 2, 2001. Nine days later Americans watched the World Trade Center towers crumble. The stem cell debate fell to the wayside.

See an accompanying sidebar highlighting the same the company's research into growing tobacco as a medicinal cure for cancer.
