SPOT NEWS:

Grass fire fuels fears -- It was one of those days when a reporter has three deadline stories in front of him and only a handful of hours to complete them. Then, the scanner squawks about a fire department response to a grassy hillside beneath a tightly-packed bevy of upscale homes overlooking the Carquinez Straits. As the area is known for constant high wind, memories of the 1991 Oakland Hills firestorm came to my mind.

I grabbed my coat and car keys.

Nurses threaten to walk -- Labor unrest seems a journalism staple at times. But more so when the threatened strike involves public safety individuals.

Crews tent, fumigate "rat house"-- Contradictions make the best stories: a beautiful debutant marrying a mass murderer in a prison ceremony, or an all-star football player who turns down millions of dollars to fight in Afghanistan.

In this case, a public health crisis is discovered within a very upscale, affluent neighborhood.
